I canceled my storage unit contract and signed a brand new one. For the unit next door….
Literally, I moved from unit 2096 to 2097.
Let me provide you some backstory:
Storage units in Washington are a racket. They charge month to month, and then the price goes up like every three months or so, until you're so fed up you have to move. There is one person renting a unit at my storage place for $2,200 a month.
This means if you don’t want to spend a bunch (which I realize is a very untechnical, subjective term) of money on storage you have to move often, which we all know is the worst thing in the entire world. (If there is something worse than moving, please reply and tell me what it is!)
Anyway, after this month's increase, I went down to the storage space office and canceled my contract.
The good news: They had the exact same size unit next door. As it turns out, they're not supposed to let you change units into the same size unit that you already have, but the woman working that day did me a solid. 👊🏻
Her manager did find out, though. I hope she doesn't get in too much trouble.😬
And here’s the catch that ended up ruining plans for my wonderful Saturday that was supposed to be about catching up on email sequences, some gym time, and a long leisurely walk with Stella.
If I moved Saturday, I'd save an additional $250 on top of saving $175 a month.
I hadn't seen or spoken to Brandon because he had been traveling and so busy with work, so picture this…
It's Friday night, and we are going to a wine release party with a couple of friends. They meet us at our house. They have to wait around because Brandon's meeting is running late. We finally get in the car to go, and I say,
"I'm so sorry to bore you all, but we need to have a quick family meeting."
I then tell Brandon that we need to move the storage unit tomorrow in order to save this money and that the relaxing Saturday he had been thinking of would now be fully ruined because we needed to move. He could absolutely think about it, but I thought that we needed to move the next day and I needed him to start to mentally prepare…
This is the absolute best part (for me and Brandon of course).
After I said, "Okay, thank you for allowing us to have our family meeting. This meeting is adjourned. How was everyone's week?” Our friends chimed in and said that they would help us.
So now, on top of everything, we had help!
We moved the very next day and I got my $252 refund.
My new favorite people (aka the friends who helped us move) spent four hours tearing the whole storage unit apart and carrying everything from one space to the next. They even organized our wine collection for us.
My partner and I had been dreading every minute of it.
And since we'd been paying so much for all that space, and it will go up again slowly but surely, we decided to get rid of a ton of stuff while we were at it.
Goodwill got two cars full! Talk about fall cleaning.
And a lot of it we didn't even mean to donate. WHOOPSIES….The pile I'd been wanting to take back to the house somehow ended up in the Goodwill pile instead.
So I got rid of even more than I planned. (Good news, As of this moment, I still haven't thought of anything that important that was in the pile... I hope I never do.)
When it was over, we were so glad. The money saved, the space cleared, the dreaded thing finally done. It was totally worth it.
The dread was the worst part.
Every price bump was the unit charging me for not doing a four-hour thing. The thing itself only took four hours and 9k steps. The dread had been costing me way more than that.
I hear this from clients all the time. They finally raise their prices, or finally hire me, and a few weeks in they say some version of the same thing: I wish I'd done this sooner.
It wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be. And the payoff came almost instantly.
I know this one from the inside. When I was at my studio, I got so fed up I decided to raise my prices and thought, "if I lose my clients, so be it." Every single client stayed.
So if there's a price you set a few years ago and haven't touched, that's your move from unit 2096. You're paying for it every month, just not on a storage unit statement.
The Raise Your Prices workshop is only 90 minutes.
It's built for entrepreneurs who already have a successful business and know the pricing that got them here won't carry them to the next level they’re craving…
There are four parts:
• Raise: we talk (well I talk, you journal) through the fear and nervous system stuff that makes a price raise feel so awful
• Hold: scripts for stating your new price, handling objections, and rolling it out to new and existing clients
• Math: work backward from your revenue goals and your actual capacity to a number
• Capacity: what has to change besides the price itself…because this is the most important part
You also get a workbook and my Price Ceiling Calculator, an AI tool that works out what you need to charge based on your goals and capacity. It's only $189, and it's yours forever to come back to again and again.
Less dread, same worth-it feeling.
