It was 3am and I had to be at my corporate job in a few hours.
I was managing a Rent the Runway location— the kind of job that looked cool from the outside and paid the bills — while sitting at my kitchen table with my laptop open, going through the membership situation I had inherited when I bought the studio.
Situation is a generous word. It was a f&*$ing mess.
Nothing was set up correctly. Numbers I couldn't reconcile.
Memberships that didn't match what should have been coming in.
Tabs open across my entire screen trying to figure out where the money was going — and why there wasn't more of it.
I was tired. But I was also young and hungry, and somewhere underneath the exhaustion was this quiet belief that this was just part of it.

(Side note: Rent the Runway eventually closed that location and offered me a move to LA to run their store there. I obviously couldn't take it — I had a studio to run. But I'd be lying if I said I never wondered what that path would have looked like.)
I didn't know it then, but the reason the money wasn't moving had nothing to do with the membership spreadsheet.
It was never a strategy problem.
